NCIDQ Releases Information About 2010 Exam Modifications

7.30.09 | Washington, DC | NCIDQ is modifying its Examination in 2010. The exam changes may affect current exam candidates. Candidates who have not passed both Section I and Section II by the end of 2009 will lose credit for the multiple-choice exam section they have passed. Candidates must pass both Section I and Section II to receive credit in 2010. The fall administration is the last chance to maintain credit they may already have toward completing the NCIDQ Examination. The fall 2009 regular registration deadline is August 3. The late registration deadline is August 17.

Milan Trade Fair Receives Bids For Photovoltaic Power Installation

7.30.09 | Milan, Italy | The Milan Trade Fair announced, according to Reuters, that it is commissioning the world's biggest rooftop photovoltaic power installation covering some 270,000 sq. meters. The winning bidder will build the plant for around 70-80 million euros and will pay the Milan fair a rental fee in return for marketing the power generated. The winning bid will be announced in September.

LIGHTFAIR International Beats All Records

7.23.09 | Atlanta, GA| LIGHTFAIR International ended its 20th annual event with record-breaking registrations of 23,416 industry professionals and conference participants. The May 2009 event increased attendance by 8.5% and exhibit booths by 6% from LFI 2007 in New York. LFI featured three product-specific Pavilions and more than 220 hours of courses and seminars were presented. AQS Develops Environmental Chamber Protocol

HNI To Close NC Facility

Significant Downturn In Nonresidential Construction Activity Projected Through 2010

City of Anaheim Selects HOK And Parsons Brinckerhoff For ARTIC Project

HOK Completes Phase 1 For University Medical Research Facility

7.09.09 | Chicago, IL | HOK completed its design of Phase One for the Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research at UW's School of Medicine and Public Health. Phase One included master planning and building design of a 469,000 sq. ft. East Tower at the health sciences campus. The seven-story tower will house the UW Paul P. Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center as well as Radiation and Imaging Sciences, Orthopedics and Regenerative Medicine Research, Medical Physics, and a Vivarium.  When all phases are complete, the WIMR project will total nearly 1.2 million sq. ft. and will feature three research towers that radiate around a center point.

ESD Completes Allstate Data Center

2009 "Best Tall Buildings" Awards Announced

Mauna Kea Beach Hotel's Design Work Takes Top Prize

7.7.09 | Honolulu, HI |  The Mauna kea Beach Hotel receved the People's Choice Award from the AIA Honolulu Chapter.  Damaged in an earthquake, the winning project renovation was designed by John Hara, principal of John Hara Associates Inc. The chapter also presented two awards of excellence to John Ida of Urban Works, Inc. for the Honolulu Zoo Learning center, and to architect Gregory Warner, Walker Warner Architects for the Kamuela-area residence.

NYSID Student Wins $30,000 Scholarship From Donghia Foundation

Bernard Zimmerman Dies

Marriott, Starwood Hotels To Install Telepresence Tech

7.6.09 | Washington, DC, White Plains, NY | Marriott International and Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide announced plans to introduce Cisco's TelePresence remote conferencing technology to several properties this year. Marriott is partnering with AT&T to bring the Cisco TelePresence technology to Marriott, JW Marriott, and Renaissance properties in 25 cities. The company said the first meeting suites would be operational by the end of October. Starwood is working with Singapore-based Tata Communications to bring Cisco TelePresence rooms to 10 of its hotels by the end of the year. The first rooms will be in Sheraton properties and Westin properties. Telepresence technology allows small groups,  to use high-definition video and real-time audio to meet while in multiple locations worldwide.

Republic of Chad Selects LEO A DALY To Design New Embassy

7.3.09 | Washington, DC | Leo A Daly's Washington office was selected by the government of the Republic of Chad to provide architectural, engineering and landscape design for its new embassy. Solar City Planned for Fort Myers, FL

7.3.09 | Fort Myers, FL | Florida Power & Light is working with the realty group Kitson & Partners to construct Babcock Ranch, an environmentally friendly city near Fort Myers, FL. Its electricity will come from the world’s largest solar voltaic power plant, a $300 million, 75-megawatt plant to be built on-site by Florida Power &  Light. will include a smart grid to let residents monitor and adjust their energy consumptions. In addition to having its electricity generated from solar energy, the entire city is expected to have wireless Internet access and electric-car chargers.Construction of the city center is scheduled to begin in June 2010, with the first residential and commercial buildings targeted for late 2010.

Caroline Baumann Named Acting Director Of Cooper-Hewitt

IFMA Announces 2009-2010 Executive Committee And Board of Directors

7.1.09 | Houston, TX | IFMA announced its 2009-2010 executive committee and board of directorsThomas L. Mitchell Jr. will serve as the new chair of the association’s board of directors, succeeding John McGee, MBA. Mr. Mitchell retired from active duty service in the U.S. Air Force as a lieutenant colonel in 2008, after more than 20 years of leading and managing programs and joined Booz Allen Hamilton, where he works to develop vision, strategies and solutions for the built environment. Other members of the executive committee include: Francis J. Kuhn, vice president of facilities and administration for Western Corporate Federal Credit Union and William A. Rodgers Jr., president and CEO of GoodCents. Mr. Kuhn and Mr. Rodgers will serve as the association’s first and second vice chairs, respectively.
